Questions

  • What’s the most unusual pet you’ve ever cared for?

One of the most unique patients I’ve cared for was a puffin with an injured wing. It was an incredible experience to assist in its treatment and recovery. Once stabilized, the puffin was transferred to a sanctuary on the mainland, where it could continue its journey to healing and safety. Helping such a special creature was truly unforgettable!

  • What’s your pet’s name, and why did you choose it?

Ruko – his name came about in a fun and unexpected way! While brainstorming names, we turned on the TV, and the Roku logo appeared. We joked about tweaking the spelling to “Ruko,” and it immediately felt like the perfect fit. The name stuck, and it suits him perfectly!

  • What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing very sick pets recover and reunite with their families. Watching their progress and witnessing the happiness in both the pets and their owners as they go home healthy is an incredibly fulfilling experience. Moments like these remind me why I love what I do.

  • What advice would you give to pet owners to ensure their pets lead healthy lives?

I encourage all pet owners to prioritize yearly bloodwork and urine tests for their pets, regardless of their age. Even young pets can have underlying conditions that may not show obvious symptoms. Early detection allows us to address health issues proactively, improving both the quality and length of their lives. Preventive care is key to keeping your pets happy and healthy!

  • How do you collaborate with pet owners to provide the best care for their animals?

I believe building trust and understanding is key to effective collaboration. I often draw from my own experiences as a pet owner to relate to clients, helping them feel supported and reassured. Additionally, I find that making comparisons to human medicine, when appropriate, can clarify medical concepts and foster a deeper understanding of their pet’s care. Together, we work as a team to ensure the best outcomes for their beloved companions.
