Dr. Julia
Veterinarian
Dr. Julia, originally from a small town in Ontario, has been passionate about animals and veterinary care from a young age.
A graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College in 2019, she began her career in small animal medicine in the Avalon area. During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Julia transitioned to emergency and ICU medicine, where she honed her skills in critical care until 2024.
Now back in general practice, Dr. Julia is enjoying reconnecting with her patients and their families, focusing on long-term care and building lasting relationships.
At home, Dr. Julia is kept on her toes by her two rambunctious dogs and a cranky but lovable senior cat. When she’s not working, you’ll find her horseback riding or enjoying quiet evenings with her husband—often falling asleep mid-show on the couch! Dr. Julia brings compassion, expertise, and a deep commitment to her patients and their well-being.
Questions
-
What’s the most unusual pet you have ever cared for?
One of the most unique pets I’ve had the pleasure of caring for was a blue-tongued skink. It was such an incredible experience to work with this fascinating reptile, and it reminded me of the amazing diversity of animals we’re lucky enough to help in this field!
-
What’s your pet’s name and why did you choose it?
We have an orange Pit Bull named Harley, inspired by my husband’s orange Harley motorcycle. The name felt like a perfect fit, especially since it pairs so well with our rescue dog, Diesel, who already came with his name. Together, Harley and Diesel make the perfect duo!
-
What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing or hearing that a patient is back to their happy, healthy self after overcoming an illness or condition. Knowing that the care we provided made a difference in their recovery and brought joy back to their lives—and their families—is truly fulfilling.
-
What advice would you give to pet owners to ensure their pets lead healthy lives?
Consider investing in pet insurance that offers direct billing. While it can sometimes feel expensive or frustrating, after years of working in emergency care, I’ve seen firsthand how it can save lives. Pet insurance provides peace of mind and ensures you can focus on your pet’s health during unexpected emergencies without the added stress of financial concerns. It’s a decision that could make all the difference when it matters most.
-
How do you collaborate with pet owners to provide the best care for their animals?
Collaboration starts with open communication. I take the time to discuss all concerns with pet owners and categorize them into what must, should, or could be addressed. From there, we explore diagnostic options and how they might impact the treatment plan. Together, we work to create a short-term plan while considering a tentative long-term strategy. This approach ensures that care is thorough, prioritized, and tailored to the pet’s unique needs, keeping their health and well-being at the center of every decision.
